Bodega del Abad Dom Bueno Godello
The rural and remote Bierzo region in the north-west of Spain enjoys a perfect climate for the production of aromatic white wines, with its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean on two sides, and is recognised as the rising star amongst Spanish wine regions. Bodega del Abad has a small vineyard site in the prestigious, high altitude district of Villafranca de Bierzo, and focus on the two heroes of the region – Godello and Mencia. If you haven’t tried either of these delicious varietals before, it’s time to see what the fuss is about.
Godello is a variety, like Chardonnay, that has great ageing potential, and a beautiful balance of fruit and minerality. Lovers of white Burgundy will recognise the citrussy freshness and a buttery core, yet this Godello has a delicious salinity – a hallmark of the wines of Galicia and a reminder of the strong influence of the Atlantic ocean. A food wine, definitely, to be enjoyed with tomato based dishes or some beautiful flavoursome seafood such as octopus.
