Domaine de la Biscarelle ‘Début d’une histoire’ Cinsault

Rhône Valley, France

Domaine de la Biscarelle is a super boutique winery located on the outskirts of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Whilst they still maintain 5 hectares within the golden appellation, the rest of their vineyards are located literally on the other side of the road that forms the boundary to the district, meaning that the wines from these vines may only carry the Côtes du Rhône name on their labels. Despite this, the quality of these wines is evident from the moment the cork is pulled – their depth and complexity elevate them way beyond their labels, and mean outstanding value!

Literally translating as ‘The Start of a Story’, Jerôme Grieco continues to blaze his own trail with the creation of this wine. It is very unusual to see Cinsault produced as a single varietal (and it is generally frowned upon by the powers that be in the Rhone Valley – so much so that they do not allow the Biscarelle logo to be shown on the front label!), but this particular example is worthy of attention being declared by Decanter Magazine as one of the best in the world. Whilst not a full bodied wine it still packs a punch, with dense black cherry and plum flavours giving way to the more delicate notes of spice and lavender. Silky smooth tannins bring the wine together and give the wine its perfectly balanced mouthfeel. Very limited quantities available.
