Gibson ‘The Smithy’ Shiraz Cabernet
Rob ‘Gibbo’ Gibson has a cracking track record as ‘The Dirt Man’. Before he started his own label about 20 years ago, Gibbo worked for Penfolds as a viticulturalist, looking after some of South Australia’s best vineyards – those that produced the fruit that ended up in Grange. Always up for a laugh, and while crafting amazing classic Barossa styles, Gibbo is now turning his hand to some more emerging styles – watch this space…
The palate is very rich and firm but very well structured . Harmonious tight acidity is balanced with volume of fruit in the middle and firm dry astringency at the end . The wine has hallmarks of treatment with good French oak and maturation to produce a supple wine with good ageing potential. The finish is long and generous, leaving spicy dark chocolate flavours lingering on the palate.
93 Points – James Halliday’s Wine Companion
It gets the tick of approval. All thanks to the black plums and cassis infused with licorice and choc-mint. Oak in play, tannins sorted and there’s a freshness and Barossa stamp that appeals.’
