Mocandunda ‘Kathryn’ Sparkling Brut
The Mocandunda vineyard supplies fruit for many of the region’s most renowned wines, and retains only a small quantity for their own label. The brand is owned by three legends of the industry in South Australia, including viticulturalist Rodger Ackland, who not only founded Mount Horrocks in the 1980s but has planted many (if not most) of the vineyards in Clare. The rustic cellar door knocks out a good pizza too – worth stopping by if you are in the area.
This sparkling has always been something of a favourite, both when we were running bars, and at our many events. What makes it different is that the guys at Mocandunda have made it as a sheer celebration of what they do best – Riesling – and boy, does it work well as an aperitif style. The nose is one big bowl of crisp orchard fruits, backed up by just a hint of toastiness. On the palate the zesty citrus notes of lime and lemon-blossom shine through, providing refreshing acidity to balance the creamy mouthfeel. Take it from us – this sparkling is a real crowd pleaser and something that little bit different!
This wine is also bottled under a ‘zork’ cork – when you pop it, the capsule retains a stopper shape, allowing you to re-seal the bottle if you want to pop it back in the fridge. Handy eh?
