Monte Ory Tempranillo Crianza
The wines of Navarra are seriously underrated in Australia but are a go-to for us when we are looking for everyday drinkers with serious flavour. Monte Ory is the Navarra winery of a very well respected Rioja producer, who owns vineyards on both sides of the mighty Ebro river that divides the two provinces.
This is a cracking value Tempranillo that you would pay a lot more if it had the name Rioja on the label. On the nose it is expressive and elegant with scents of liquorice, black fruit, and dark chocolate. With its perfect bottle ageing the wine is soft and smooth on the palate, with rounded tannins and a hint of toasty oak, leading to a long finish.
Back in the sixties, Rioja winemaker Luis Gurpegui Muga made the decision to purchase a new winery specifically for the production of the wines from his Navarra vineyards. He found what he was looking for in the town of Villafranca, near the banks of the mighty Ebro river, and set to work remodelling the old winery for modern production. The winery itself was named after the 2000m Ori mountain, situated in the far western part of the Pyrenees, on the frontier of the old kingdom of Navarra and the French Basque country.
