Payne’s Rise ‘Mr Jed’ Pinot Noir
This lovely boutique winery is located in the Upper Yarra Valley, specialising in small-batch wines from carefully selected ,estate-grown fruit from their Seville vineyard. Owner Tim is a very highly regarded viticulturalist, who looks after many of the region’s most well-known vineyards, while wife Narelle looks after the sales and functions at their gorgeous, rustic cellar door. The wines themselves are made by well-known winemaker Franco d’Anna of Hoddles Creek fame. Go and say hi if you are in the region… and tell them we sent you!
An oh-so elegant Pinot Noir with real depth of flavour. Bright and perfumed it is light to medium bodied with a fine, silky tannin structure, fresh red berry fruit flavours and clean acidity. On the palate you’ll enjoy notes of wild strawberries, red cherries, toasty oak with warm and earthy aromatics. The wine is not fined or filtered, to maintain all of the beautiful, subtle flavours inherent in the fruit – this does mean it may appear slightly cloudy (this is very definitely not a fault!).
95 Points, Gold – James Halliday’s Wine Companion –
Hand-picked, destemmed, straight to fermenter, cold soak for 3 days, aged in new (20%), 1 yo (20%) and 2-3 yo oak for 10 months, no fining or filtration. The cloudy, cherry-red appearance is nothing to be concerned about, indeed it’s an indication that all the pinot goodies have not been fined or filtered away. A vibrant, youthful look and scent of fresh cherries, raspberries, cranberries with floral musk, dried flowers. Juicy-fruited, the palate works the mouth with energy. 95 Points – Jeni Port
