Bodega San Pedro Regalado ‘Embocadero’ Tempranillo

Ribera del Duero, Spain

What can you say about Ribera del Duero? Since Robert Parker propelled the region to superstardom in the 1980s it has earned its reputation for producing the best of the best of Spanish reds.. yet perhaps for this reason it is notoriously difficult to find anything you would want to drink at a reasonable price point. Many retailers comment that their customers would simply rather drink Rioja as they get better value for money, and we found much the same, until we came across this gem of a wine from a tiny co-operative in the village of La Aguilera. The value is incredible, it is a stunning wine and a modern interpretation of Tempranillo that cannot fail impress.

This is a Tempranillo (or Tinto Fino as it is known in this part of Spain) with plenty of depth and character, fuller in body and more powerful than its counterparts from Rioja. Brooding dark berry fruits are underpinned by dark chocolate and mineral notes, and full tannins that give the wine its backbone. Elegant toasty oak comes through to round off the palate, with a lick of gentle vanilla creaminess. Best enjoyed with ballsy meat dishes that can match up to its powerful character.
