Domaine La Croix Belle Champs de Lys
The Domaine La Croix Belle estate has been in the hands of the Boyer family for some 300 years – it’s a site rich in the history of the region. It was current owner Jacques Boyer who pioneered the radical shift towards production of quality fruit as early as the 1970s, and replanted his vineyards to strive for the quality he felt his unique terroir could attain (a good decade before the French Government’s vine pull scheme was rolled out across the Languedoc region). That hard work paid off, and the wines these days have a wonderful elegance and concentration to them, representing superb value for money.

This is a beautifully complex wine with an ever-changing palette of flavours. The blend is driven by Viognier, with Grenache Blanc and Chardonnay in support, and a touch of Sauvignon Blanc to add zesty acidity. The mouthfeel is deliciously unctuous -ripe and fleshy with flavours of preserved lemon, ripe stone fruits and perfumed white flowers. A hint of spice and orange peel become evident as the wine opens up. This is a very versatile food wine but absolutely perfect with fleshy fish dishes with an Asian twist (think salmon with ginger and lemongrass).
