Elderton ‘Command’ Shiraz
It’s always a pleasure to catch up with Cam & Allister Ashmead – whether it’s at the winery in Nuri, or over our annual long lunches in Brisbane. We’ve been supporting Elderton for too many years to recall, and they’ve got a huge following amongst you. Outstanding estate-grown wines and world-renowned flagships are the constants here – year in, year out they come up with the goods. A brilliant mid-sized, family owned winery – and two great blokes we call our mates!
This is a seriously rich and powerful wine. On the nose it shows lifted ripe plum fruit flavours and hints of Christmas cake spice, with subtle gamey notes. On the palate it is rich and attractive with spicy ripe berries reminiscent of summer pudding, supported by silky tannins that together provide a focused structure, and a powerful yet elegant finish.
96 Points – James Halliday’s Wine Companion
‘Elderton’s iconic Command Shiraz is sourced from an 1894-planted block of ancestor vines on its Nuriootpa estate; matured for an extended period in new French and American oak puncheons. Full bodied, rich and commanding, as the name suggests, with thick-shouldered blackberry and plum fruits cut with baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate, earth and punchy cedar tones. Weighty and opulent with thick, gypsum-like tannin support, plenty of Barossa horsepower and a finish that trails off persistently with flavours of ripe berries, spice and cedar.’
