Elderton ‘Ode to Lorraine’ Cabernet Shiraz Merlot

Barossa Valley, Australia

It’s always a pleasure to catch up with the Cam & Allister Ashmead – whether it’s at the winery in Nuri, or over our annual long lunches in Brisbane.  We’ve been supporting Elderton for too many years to recall.  Outstanding Estate wines and world-renowned flagships are the constants here – year in, year out.  A brilliant mid-sized, family owned winery – and two great blokes we call our mates!

This delicious blend has been made by Elderton for over 30 years and it has to be the best bang for buck in the range. It is so good that Cam and Allister, upon realising what a gem the wine was, decided to re-name it in honour of their mum (and Barossa legend, not to mention co-founder of Elderton itself) Lorraine, bless!

It is, unsurprisingly, a wine of considerable power. On the nose it offers deep, brooding dark fruit notes and distinctive herbal notes of bay and sage, emanating from the dominant Cabernet component. On the palate sweet spices and dark chocolate support the vibrant cassis, and all is balanced by a backbone of new French oak and long fine tannins. This wine will reward cellaring and will continue to evolve over the next 15 years.
