Giaconda is a winery that needs no introduction. We are amongst a lucky few who receive a small annual allocation of the range from this iconic Beechworth producer, and they won’t be around for long. While we are on the subject of Beechworth – if it is not on top of your list of winery regions to visit, do yourself a favour and put it in the mix. This Victorian high country town is picture perfect, with pretty cafes and quaint antique shops – it’s a truly delightful spot to while away a long weekend.

It would be fair to say that this is the very best release of Giaconda Nebbiolo. It is an essay in how Nebbiolo is ideally grown at altitude to ensure varietal authenticity and depth of flavour. It opens with damp dewy roses, hints of sandalwood, a whiff of tar, then red fruits, freshly damp forest floor and well-worn polished leather notes. The palate is tensile with an army of fine tannins carrying the fresh red fruits long on the palate. Its charm is in the abundancy of fruit; its strength in its athletic, finely tuned tannin structure complemented by well integrated acidity. Intense and long, powerful yet elegant. The bar has been raised.
