Reyes de Aragon Cava Brut Nature ‘El Monje’

Calatayud, Spain

The exceptional Reyes de Aragon Cava range are made by the prestigious Bodegas Langa in the heart of the Sierra Vicor. Hailing from Calatayud rather than Penedes (where Cava is traditionally produced) allows them to experiment, and they tend to use a significant proportion of Chardonnay in their blend as opposed to the usual Xarel-lo and Parellada, leading to a higher quality.

This is our first Brut Nature Cava, and we found it to have surprising roundness on the palate. The wine has a pale yellow colour and a very fine mousse with a lovely, persistent bead. On the nose its toasty brioche notes come to the fore, with touches of coconut and almond, following which its delightful tropical fruit notes come through. On the palate it has good acidity and mouth-filling flavour, with ripe citrus notes (particularly pink grapefruit) coming to the fore and adding zest to the wine.

if you haven’t heard of the term Brut Nature before it indicates that the  wine has had no sugar added to it during the winemaking process, making it the driest style of sparkling wine on the market. As they say in the region, this is Cava in its purest form.
