Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc

Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa

Southern Right was founded by South African wine royalty Anthony Hamilton Russell with a laser focus on just two varietals – Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage. Situated in the stunning Hemel-an-Aarde Valley (Afrikaans for Heaven on Earth… and if you have ever been to the region you will know why), it is only a short drive from the coastal town of Hermanus – famous for the annual migration of Southern Right whales through the shallow waters of Walker Bay. This is a cool climate region by South African standards and has become the epicentre for elegant European styles with great minerality and purity of fruit.

Southern Right is also dedicated to the conservation of their eponymous whales and a donation is made from every bottle sold to Southern Right Whale conservation initiatives.

We are absolutely delighted to be able to stock this elegant and complex Sauvignon Blanc. The cooler climate of Walker Bay delivers the perfect conditions for restraint and tension in the wine, allowing the natural fruit flavours to shine, while balanced with a distinct minerality. Tasting it blind you would be likely to pick it as an Old World rather than a New World wine, such is the palate complexity and the taming of New World style fruit aromas. In the words of the winery, ‘this is Sauvignon Blanc as fine wine, not Sauvignon Blanc as simply a varietal expression’ – we couldn’t put it better ourselves.
